The Plan

Posted: December 1, 2012 in Gentlemanly Affairs, Real Recognize Real

Bro, what’s the plan?

The plan… the plan? Man, I don’t even know what’s for breakfast tomorrow. There is no plan. There is, you could say, a general direction. I call it: forward.

I’ve never been much of a planner. Plans require stability and the world is forever changing. So plan not to plan. Roll with the punches. Because you never know what life is going to throw your way.

For instance, I was in love once…

And after about five months of bliss and merriment, one day I got the dreaded break-up call. Out of nowhere. Turns out the girl that I was in love with was still in love with her ex. And I can understand that because sometimes, when I think about it, I feel like I still love her too.

And if that short and depressing story tells you anything… it’s that I really know how to pick ‘em. No, nice try, but that’s not it. It’s that you can’t get caught up in plans. I wasn’t quite thinking three kids and a white picket fence (and a dog) just yet, but you have to know that life is going to pull the rug from under your feet sometimes.

One of my best friends (and I do not use that term lightly) had to pull out of school to take care of his family this year. Because the position of ‘man of the house’ fell to him due to unfortunate and (as they often are) unforeseen circumstances. You think this guy complained about things not going his way? Nope. Like a man, he just stepped up and did what he had to. I miss seeing you around, Zach.

Anyway, plans can be great when they are followed through on. But other times, they just don’t work out in an increasingly unpredictable world. Plans will fall apart. People will disappoint you. And life will give you lemons.

So? Quit planning. Dream.
Dream BIG and then make those dreams your reality. Settle for nothing less. The world is yours.
